Another LEC Split, another victory for G2 Esports
30 July 2024
For years now, Berlin-based G2 Esports have been a household name in the world of international esports and this year, they have once again been showing why. Less than two months ago, G2 won IEM Dallas 2024 and the accompanying $ 100.000 in prize money by beating Team Vitality in the grand final, and now the Germans also clinched the League of Legends EMEA Championship Summer 2024. By doing so, they have made it an incredible five LEC victories in a row.
Top 3 finish in Regular Season
It has been abundantly clear for a while now that G2 Esports is the team to beat when it comes to League of Legends in Europe. The German side nevertheless encountered some minor setbacks over the 2024 Regular Season. They were off to a rather slow start as two of their three first matches ended in defeat, first against their compatriots from SK Gaming and then against Swiss organization Team BDS.
G2 picked up the pace after that though, not losing a single match anymore, which ended in a third-place finish in the final table. Only the previously two mentioned organizations SK Gaming and Team BDS managed to outperform the favorites during the Regular Season. Third place was sufficient for a spot in the upper bracket for the Playoffs, which was always the goal, so the Germans were not too worried about their rusty start to the season.
Playoff shock
G2 Esports were matched with Karmine Corp from France in the Upper Bracket Quarterfinals and as expected, the Germans managed to book a comfortable victory (2-0). They repeated that result in the Semifinals against Team BDS, to whom they had lost earlier in the Regular Season, to once again confirm their status as all-out favorites for the victory. The slow start to the season was forgotten by now as G2 started to really pick up some steam on the way to their fifth LEC victory in a row.
Or at least, that’s what it seemed like until they met Fnatic in the Upper Bracket Final. On the 22nd of July, both teams went head-to-head in what ended up being a 3-hour thriller of a match that saw Fnatic snatch a surprising victory. It all came down to a fifth and final battle in the end, which took Fnatic just under 26 minutes to make theirs. The result? A spot in the Grand Final for them and a spot in the Lower Bracket Final for G2.
Fnatic vs G2 rematch
After facing Team BDS for the third time this 2024 season, G2 Esports managed to make it to the Grand Final as well after all and this time it was not going to be a close one. The German organization came out guns blazing, while Fnatic didn’t really find their footing at any moment. Less than two hours later and just three games later, G2 Esports crowned themselves champions of LEC Summer 2024, making it five consecutive LEC victories in a row for the German powerhouse.
