Brand-new Chennai Esports Global Championship announced

1 April 2025

When we write about international esports, a lot of regions around the world often pass the revue: the United States, Europe, parts of Asia, etc. One region that has been mentioned surprisingly little, or better said one country, is India. Despite being the most populated nation in the world, with 1,41 billion inhabitants at the moment of writing, their presence in the world of international esports is not yet what you would expect.

Then again, like is many other parts around the world, an esports infrastructure is starting to take shape in India. Recently, for example, the government of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost Indian state, has announced their very own international esports tournament. Under the name “Chennai Esports Global Championship” (CeGC), the local government wants to bring the best teams in the world for various titles to India in an attempt to position Chennai among the major esports hub on the planet.

Chennai Esports Global Championship

More than anything though, the Chennai Esports Global Championship is a bold statement in the world of competitive gaming. By organizing the CeGC, which should take place later this year, Tamil Nadu is highlighting its commitment to the further growth of esports in both their own region and India as a whole. It is actually the first time that an Indian state has decided to organize such a large-scale esports event, especially as it aims to gather the best esports talent from around the world.

Tami Nadu, by the way, is the sixth largest Indian state in terms of population with about 72 million inhabitants. Chennai is its capital, which explains why the upcoming inaugural edition of the Esports Global Championship will be held there. With almost 7 million inhabitants, it is one of the world’s so-called megacities and throughout the centuries, it has built a reputation for itself as a stand-out host of international sporting events.

Further details on the way

As far as further details about the first edition of the Chennai Esports Global Championship go, we still need a little bit more patience. Important information like, for example, a full list of titles that will feature during the event and the formats of competition have not yet been revealed. As a matter of fact, at the moment of writing, we don’t even know the exact dates of the event yet. All we know for now is that the CeGC is set to take place towards the end of this year.

What we do know, is that the financing for the event is provided by the Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, which has received Rs. 562 crore (around $ 66 million) from the government for its 2025-2026 budget. Part of that money is to be used to make the Chennai Esports Global Championship a reality this year. It will be more than interesting to see what the event will look like eventually and which teams will be competing there, but at least there is no shortage of ambition in Tamil Nadu.
