29 November 2023
Looking back over the past few years, Valorant has been amongst the most popular and most played international esports titles in the world. One major market where there is still a lot of untapped potential left for the Riot Games franchise is India. The game has gained significant popularity in the Asian nation in recent years, so much in fact that Riot has now announced the first international Valorant event to be held in India. The tournament will be called Convergence and is set to take place between Thursday, December 14th, and Sunday, December 17th.
Placing Valorant in the spotlight in India
With over 1,4 billion inhabitants, of which over half is aged 30 years or younger, India represents a huge market for game developers like Riot Games. That is also why Riot has been intensifying its focus on the southern Asian country since the launch of Valorant there about three years ago. The announcement of Convergence is the latest in a series of initiatives to pull interest in the game to the next level in India. A year ago, Riot introduced the first Indian agent, Harbour, and not long ago, the first anniversary of this character was celebrated with a big beach clean-up event. That wasn’t the only high-profile Valorant-related event in India this year, because fans also celebrated the third anniversary of the esports title in in the country by organizing the Bharat Valorant Celebrations.
“Convergence is us at Riot saying thanks to our amazing fans in India, who have supported us since the launch of VALORANT in 2020”, says Sukamal Pegu, Esports Lead in India & South Asia at Riot Games, about the announcement of the Convergence tournament, “We have also since grown the India team to deliver such hyperlocal experiences to our players here. With Convergence, Indian fans will finally get to see some of their favorite VALORANT athletes perform in person and interact with them off-stage. It will be a perfect ending to the 2023 VCT season and we are just getting started here in India for such international events”.
Best in the world to gather in Bangalore
As mentioned before, Convergence is set to take place from December 14th to December 17th at the Manpho Convention Center in Bangalore, in the south of India. The biggest hall of the venue can host up to 10.000 seats or up to 15.000 standing spectators. The expectation is that this capacity will be filled as Convergence will attract some of the very best Valorant talent from around the world, including the likes of Vitality, GenG and Global Esports.
We are excited to partner with Riot Games to introduce their first-ever international VALORANT tournament to the gaming community in India”, says Vamsi Krishna, Founder and Managing Director of The Esports Club, who are co-organizing Convergence together with Riot Games, “This event will not only enhance the esports experiences in the country but also elevate India's presence on the global gaming stage”.
