Gen.G wins second consecutive Mid-Season Invitational (MSI)
14 July 2025
A series of 23 consecutive wins without a loss. That’s the record which Korean organization Gen.G brought to the 2025 Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) when the international esports event started back at the of June. And now, about two weeks later, that series is still going strong, as the Koreans crowned themselves undefeated champions after clinching their second consecutive MSI title in Vancouver last weekend. They beat fellow Korean esports organization T1 in a Grand Final that ended up being the most-watched match of a tournament that broke the previous MSI overall viewership record as well.
Gen.G rivalry with T1
Naturally, as reigning MSI champions, Gen.G started as one of the favorites for the title at the 2025 MSI. They were not unrivalled though, as their compatriots from T1 came into the tournament as reigning League of Legends world champions, after winning The International last year. On the road to that title, they actually eliminated Gen.G in Upper Bracket Round 2, before becoming world champions thanks to a 2-3 victory over Chinese side Bilibili Gaming.
Gen.G got a chance for revenge at the most recent 2025 Mid-Season Invitational, as both Korean sides managed to make it to the final in Vancouver, where the tournament was held at Pacific Coliseum. What’s more, MSI 2025 even gave us two clashes between probably the two best League of Legends teams in the world right now, as they faced off against each other in both the Upper Bracket Final and the Grand Final.
On both occasions, it was Gen.G Esports who came out on top. Their first clash took place in the Upper Bracket Final, which ended up being a tight affair. Gen.G took the first battle and T1 took the second, before Gen.G restored their lead by winning the third battle. It then took T1 more than 45 minutes to get back into the match, but they eventually equalized, bringing the Upper Bracket Final to a fifth and final battle. Gen.G needed just over half an hour to make that one theirs and send T1 to the Lower Bracket Final.
Re-match in the Grand Final
Their victory in the Upper Bracket Final brought Gen.G straight to the Grand Final, while the other spot was for the winner of the clash between T1 and Anyone’s Legend from China. The Korean side’s 3-2 victory meant that the Grand Final was going to be a repeat of the earlier Upper Bracket Final.
T1 clearly learned from their earlier defeat at the hands of their compatriots and came out roaring. After three battles, it was 1-2 in their favor, which meant just one more win would make them champions of the 2025 MSI. It was not to be for them though, despite putting up an excellent fight. Gen.G was simply too strong, with special thanks to mid-laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, who also ended up clinching the Finals MVP title. Together with his teammates, he managed to turn the 1-2 deficit around, taking the fourth battle in less than 27 minutes and the fifth and final battle in just over 35 minutes. Like that, the Koreans won their second Mid-Season Invitational in a row and cemented their place as one of the very best League of Legends sides in recent memory.
