Huge hack causes Rainbow Six Siege chaos

30 December 2025

Players of the hugely popular international esports title Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege (often simply called Rainbow Six Siege) have had a tumultuous final weekend of 2025. What was supposed to be a regular playing session turned into complete chaos for many players, though they themselves might have perceived it as some kind of Christmas miracle as well. Suddenly and without any warning, it just started raining freebies and gifts for players, such as R6 Credits, exclusive skins and countless Alpha Packs. It was not a surprise Christmas gift from developer Ubisoft though, but the result of a large-scale hack.

What happened?

The madness started on Saturday, December 27th, when players suddenly noticed their accounts were receiving enormous amounts of R6 Credits, which can be used to purchase all kinds of in-game content, like weapons and operator skins. Some accounts received up to 2 billion R6 credits, which in the official Ubisoft Store would cost around $ 13,3 million to purchase. On top of that, thousands of accounts received free Alpha Packs, which is the name of the loot boxes in Rainbow Six Siege, and free rare and exclusive skins.
“We're aware of an incident currently affecting Rainbow Six Siege”, wrote Rainbow Six Siege X, the game’s official X account, “Our teams are working on a resolution. We will share further updates once available […] Siege and the Marketplace have been intentionally shut down while the team focuses on resolving the issue.”

Unexplained bans and unbans

It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the players who logged into Rainbow Six Siege on December 27th. That’s because more than a few players suddenly received bans as well, without any further explications. Fortunately, many of those banned accounts were unbanned a while later. Ubisoft though, has said that they might ban players very soon if they have benefited from the hack and used it to cheat. More news about this is expected shortly.

Rainbow Six Siege temporarily offline

It was already mentioned in the message on the official Rainbow Six Siege X account quoted earlier, but Ubisoft decided to take the game offline temporarily in reaction to the recent hack. They also deactivated the Market Place in order to stop players from cashing in on the free R6 Credits and other exclusives as a result of the hack. As part of that decision, the company also rolled back all transactions that took place from about 11:00 UTC onwards. That is because the sheer scale of the hack could destabilize the in-game economy and ecosystem.

There is some good news for players as well, though. Ubisoft has already communicated that players will not be punished for using any of the hacked credits and other in-game items. At the same time, the company has started an investigation into the hack and has vowed that they will find the people responsible for it.
Ubisoft has not yet communicated when Rainbow Six Siege and its Market Place will be back online and functioning, but as far as we are concerned, the news can come any moment now.
