Sweden's Alliance crowned Apex Legend world champions
5 August 2024
Between August 1st and August 4th, much of the focus at the 2024 Esports World Cup was on Apex Legends as the best players in the world gathered in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) to compete against each other. It eventually came down to Grand Final of no less than thirteen maps that took an incredible seven hours to finish, and in the end, it was Swedish esports organization Alliance who clinched the title, plus a whopping $ 600.000 of prize money. It was the joint-longest Apex Legends Grand Final ever and the longest ever on LAN.
Group winners
For the followers of international esports and Apex Legends in particular, Alliance need no introduction. The Swedish organization has consistently been amongst the best teams in the game ever since it was launched back in 2019. This year alone, they already won the 13YOG x Redragon Series Summer and the ALGS: 2024 Split 2 Pro League EMEA. Strangely enough though, Alliance had not yet been able to win a single LAN tournament, up until last weekend.
The Swedes were placed in Group B, together with several other Apex powerhouses, including American organizations TSM (formerly known as Team SoloMid) and NRG Esports, and the Japanese fighters from NORTHEPTION. They managed to finish first in that group with 107 Total Points, a comfortable 19 points more than second-placed British esports organization EXO Clan. At the same time, this excellent start to the Apex World Cup did not guarantee anything, as the Grand Finals were stacked with the best teams in the world.
12 rosters match-points eligible
On top of that, no less than twelve rosters were match-point eligible going into the final game of the Grand Finals. After an action-packed series of games, there was a clear top three left though, consisting of Alliance, Saudi Arabian organization Team Falcons (formerly known as Falcons Esports) and North American side Luminosity Gaming. The first two ended up being the dominant forces, with Team Falcons actually outscoring Alliance in Total Points: 114 – 112.
It was the European organization who got the win though, thanks to a better position on the final map. As a result, Alliance booked the first major LAN victory in their history and earned $ 600.000 in prize money by doing so. Team Falcons, who fight under a Saudi Arabian flag but feature a mostly Australian roster, finished in second place for $ 375.000 in prize money. The third and final spot on the podium was for Luminosity, who earned $ 200.000 in the process.
ALGS: 2024 Split 2 Playoffs
The next big Apex Legends event is already almost upon us, as the best teams in the world will once again come together from August 29th to September 1st. That weekend, the Apex Legends Global Series: 2024 Split 2 Playoffs will take place in Mannheim, Germany. It will be interesting to see if Alliance can live up to their title of world champions and make it two major LAN victories in a row.
