Nostalgia reigns at Riot Games with return of Go4LoL

Riot Games has some amazing news for the true fans of League of Legends, for the OGs, so to speak. Just a few days ago, the studio behind one of the most popular international esports titles of all time announced the return of Go4LoL, one of the earlier competitive circuits in the rich League of Legends history. Riot has revealed that they want to organize a revamped edition of Go4LoL in August of this year. Soon, players will be able to follow in the footsteps of LoL legends like Enrique “xPeke” Cedeño Martinez and Paul “sOAZ” Boyer, who took their first serious competitive steps competing in Go4LoL.
What is Go4LoL?
We do not need to explain this to the more experienced League of Legends players, but the newer and/or younger players might need a quick introduction. Go4LoL was one of the first real competitive League of Legends formats, held weekly. To be precise, every Sunday of the week, and every team of five players was eligible to join. It typically attracted relatively lower-ranked teams though, who were not quite at the level of the most competitive international events yet. It was run by ESL (German international esports organizer Electronic Sports League) in Europe and NESL (National Electronic Sports League) in the United States.
Riot reviving Go4LoL
In a surprise move brimming with nostalgia, Riot Games recently announced the return of Go4LoL. The event will bring back an older version of the game and the publisher is also planning to largely stick to the original structure of the first Go4LoL events. That means weekly tournaments for amateur and semi-pro teams in massive open brackets, fighting for Riot Points (RP), big cash prizes and excellent opportunities for players to get into the crosshairs of the best teams in the League of Legends community.
“GO4LoL IS BACK”, was posted on the official League of Legends (UK, IE & Nordics) X account recently, “Dust off your old mains. Rally your squad. It's time to relive the classics. Go4LoL returns with League Classic, bringing back the competitive spirit for the community that started it all. Whether you were there from the beginning or you're ready to experience it for the first time, this is your chance.”
Go4LoL 2026 format
While Riot Games still need to reveal certain details concerning the revival of Go4LoL, much of the expected structure has already been made public. The event will adopt a weekly format throughout August of this year with variations between regions. North American will kick the whole thing off on August 1st, with four weekly qualifiers taking place on Saturdays after that. Think single-elimination brackets open to all teams, without qualification requirements or registration limits. The top two teams from each qualifier earn a place in the grand finals on August 29th.
As for Europe, the Go4LoL 2026 qualifiers will start on August 8th. As in North America, the European structure consists of four qualifiers throughout August, leading up to a best-of-three grand final on August 30th. It is not yet clear whether Riot Games has plans to continue the revival of Go4LoL beyond August 2026.
